According to new research recently published by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America , researchers have found that ‘dirty’ linens could be a source of sporadic outbreaks of Clostridium difficile infection. This is because the laundering of contaminated bedsheets does not completely remove all traces of C. difficile, a bacteria that causes infectious diarrhoea.
Researchers found that even after a full washing cycle, cotton sheets inoculated with the Clostridium difficile bacteria were still present and even more worrying is the fact that the bacteria had also cross contaminated with uncontaminated sheets after washing.
According to Dr Katie Laird, PhD and Head of the Infections Disease Research Group at De Montfort University and the lead author of the study, “The findings of this study may explain some sporadic outbreaks of C. difficile infections in hospitals from unknown sources.”
